Design

The Mississippis came about as a result of a Congressional compromise. Initially four 12,000 ton battleships and two armored cruisers were to be authorized, but instead the Navy was able to secure three additional Connecticuts and two 13,000 ton battleships at the cost of the two planned cruisers.[1]

As reduced versions of the Connecticuts, they were unsuccessful and went into reserve only a few years after completion before being sold to Greece in 1914, the money from their sale paying for a third dreadnought of the New Mexico class.[2]
