U.S.S. Intrepid was an experimental torpedo ram completed for the U.S. Navy in 1874.
Construction
Template:DANFS Intrepid was designed by Isaiah Hanscom for experimental work with the Bureau of Ordnance, her engines were designed and built by the Morgan Iron Works, New York City, and were ordered on 23 December, 1871. She was laid down during 1873 by the Boston Navy Yard and was launched on 5 March, 1874, sponsored by Miss H. Evelyn Frothingham Pooke.[6]
Service
Intrepid was commissioned 31 July, 1874 Commander Augustus P. Cooke in command. She departed Boston on 3 August and arrived at the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport the next day. She departed Newport on 31 August and arrived at the New York Navy Yard the next day, 1 September. The following two months were devoted to spar torpedo trials along the North Atlantic Coast. Intrepid returned to New York on 24 October, and decommissioned on 30 October.
The steamer recommissioned New York Navy Yard 28 August but, with the exception of brief visits to New England ports in 1875 and 1876, she remained at the Navy Yard. She decommissioned 22 August, 1882 for conversion to a light-draft gunboat for service in Chinese waters. Conversion work was suspended on 22 September, 1883 and a subsequent survey in 1892 found Intrepid unserviceable. She was on sold on 9 May, 1892 to Mathew Gill, Jr., of Philadelphia.[7]
