H.M. T.B. 25 was the prototype vessel of the 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.
Construction
T.B. 25 was designed as a lengthened version of the earlier Childers built for the Victorian Navy of Australia.[5] Her design included a low "bull nose" bow that included a fixed torpedo tube. This bow proved totally unsatisfactory owing to the amount of water that washed over the decks, and she was soon rebuilt with a conventional straight stem without a bow tube.[6]
Service
Commissioned as tender to Valorous in June 1886 for flotilla manoeuvres.[7][8]
In 1895, she was one of twenty-three torpedo boats of at least 125 feet in length stationed in Portsmouth along with four smaller ones.[9]
Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 025.[10]
