H.M.S. E 41 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.
Service
E 41 struck the submerged E 4 as the other submarine was conducting a mock submerged attack on her. The accident caused both subs to sink, E 41 receiving the better of it, as she was on the surface. Nonetheless, she sank in just 90 seconds, with the loss of 18 of her crew. One man, Stoker Petty Officer William Brown, escaped from the sunken submarine an hour and a half after it sank.[6]
E 41 was raised and returned to service in mid-1917.
At the end of 1920, she was one of nine "E" class boats of Group "H" in reserve at Rosyth under the collective command of Lieutenant Victor C. Dorman-Smith, and tender to Dolphin.[7]
