H.M.S. E 1 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.

Service

On 15 October, 1914, E 1, E 9 and E 11 sortied to enter the Baltic. Lieutenant Laurence took the E 1 into the Baltic on the 17th, where he attacked Template:DE-ViktoriaLuise unsuccessfully before proceeding to the Russian port of Libau.[6]

On 19 August, 1915, she succeeded in torpedoing the battlecruiser Moltke.
