U.S.S. E-2, named U.S.S. Sturgeon until shortly before completion, was one of two Skipjack (or "E") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
She commissioned on 14 February, 1912 with Ensign Clarence N. Hinkamp in command.
Service
On 15 January 1916 , E-2 suffered a battery explosion and fire during dockside tests of a new nickel battery intended to eliminate dangers of chlorine gas release. Four men were killed and seven injured. Lieutenant Chester W. Nimitz led the investigation which cleared E-2's commanding officer Lieutenant Charles M. Cooke, Jr. of blame in the incident.
