U.S.S. South Dakota was one of six Pennsylvania Class armoured cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

She was commissioned on 27 January, 1908 with Captain James T. Smith in command.

She was renamed U.S.S. Huron on 7 June, 1920 to free her name for the new armoured cruiser South Dakota.
