The office of Fifth Sea Lord was created on 10 January, 1917 as Director of Naval Aviation with responsibility for the Royal Naval Air Service. However, with the merging of the RNAS with the Royal Flying Corps on 3 January, 1918 and control of the newly formed Royal Air Force devolving to a newly empowered Air Ministry the position was disbanded until being re-created in the 1930s with responsibility for the Fleet Air Arm.
