His doctorate thesis, "Forging the Shaft of the Spear of Victory: The Creation and Evolution of the Home Fleet in the Prewar Era, 1900-1914", was completed in 2013 at the University of Salford under the supervision of Professor Eric J. Grove, now at Liverpool Hope University.
