U.S.S. Tarpon was one of five Octopus (or "C") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
Service
Tarpon was commissioned on 23 November, 1909 with Lieutenant Prentiss P. Bassett in command.
On 17 November, 1911, Tarpon was redesignated C-3.
In 1916, all five "C" class boats were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, their crews living aboard U.S.S. Severn, assisted by the tug Potomac.[3]
