U.S.S. Narwhal was one of three Narwhal (or "D") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
Narwhal was commissioned on 23 November, 1909 with Lieutenant Julius C. Townsend in command. On 17 November, 1911, Narwhal was redesignated D-1.
