Walter Conway Hake

Commander R.N.R. Walter Conway Hake, R.D., Royal Navy, Retired (25 November, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Hake was born in London on 25 November, 1888.[1]

Hake was granted the rank of Acting Sublieutenant with a date of seniority of 25 January, 1911. He received a Certificate of Competency on 28 June, 1911 with a grade of "O.C.".[2]

As an Acting Sublieutenant, Hake was appointed to Adventure for the Annual Manoeuvres on 2 July, 1912. After leaving on the 26th of July, his evaluator noted Hake's service was satisfactory.[3]

Great War

On 14 September, 1914, Hake was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Edinburgh Castle as Acting Lieutenant,[4][5] boarding the ship that same day.[6]

By July, 1915, he was acting as the ship's navigating officer.[7]

Hake was accorded a date of seniority of 2 August, 1915.[8]

On 20 February, 1916, Hake piloted the S.S. Photinia to Stanley Harbour.[9]

Hake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 2 March, 1916.[10] On 12 March, he was discharged from Edinburgh Castle to the armed merchant cruiser Kildonan Castle.[11]


Hake was appointed in command of the destroyer Fame on 19 August, 1918.[12]

Hake was demobilised on 31 May, 1920.[13]

Hake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 2 August, 1923.

He was retired on 20 August, 1946 with the War Service rank of Commander R.N.R..
