U.S.S. Chattanooga was one of six Denver Class protected cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

She was launched on 7 March, 1903 by Crescent Shipyard, sponsored by Miss L. N. Chambliss. She completed at the New York Navy Yard and commissioned 11 October 1904, Commander Alexander Sharp in command.
