Service
Mars commissioned at Portsmouth on 8 June, 1897, Captain Reginald F. H. Henderson in command.[7]
She recommissioned at Devonport on 2 January 1912.[8]
In mid-July, 1914, the ship was ordered to take up station in the Humber as part of a force of four Majestic class battleships and two Cressy class cruisers being sent there to be demobilised on the 25th. Her crew was to be transferred to Albion.[9]
Paid off at Invergordon on 7 July, 1920.[10]
Radio
As of 1901, while serving in the Channel Squadron, she had or was slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[11]
Torpedoes
In 1904, in a competition to investigate how rapidly submerged tubes could be fired four times sequentially, starting with the tube loaded and the bar out, the ship's crew was able to do this in 4 minutes, 20 seconds. The best time was achieved by Cressy at 50.75 seconds, though 2:30 was more typical.[12]
