Admiral SIR Arthur John Davies, K.B.E., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (26 September, 1877 – 13 December, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Davies was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 15 January, 1899.[1]

Davies was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1909.[2]

Davies was appointed as Flag Commander in Exmouth on 1 July, 1912 and transferred with Vice Admiral Briggs to Dreadnought on 17 December. On 1 July, 1914, he went to H.M.S. Excellent for War Staff Duties.[3]

He served as gunnery officer in Tiger from 16 December, 1914 before being superseded on 5 January, 1916, as he had been promoted to Captain 31 December, 1915.[4]

In May 1917, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cassandra.[5]

He was appointed in command of Lion in May, 1918.[6]

Davies was appointed in command of King George V on 18 March, 1919.[7]

On 20 September, 1920, he was appointed Naval Assistant to the Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel.[8]

Davies was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to the King on 8 July, 1926,[9] as Commodore, First Class.[10] On 25 October, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Kelly.[11]

World War II

As a retired Admiral, Davies was called up to help manage convoy operations, and was mentioned in dispatches on 20 August, 1943 for his "outstanding devotion to duty during three years arduous services as Commodore of Ocean Convoys." He reverted to the Retired List on 22 May, 1944. His death on 13 December, 1954 was attributed in part to "myocardial degeneration."[12]
