Burrell Clinton Allen
Rear Admiral (retired) Burrell Clinton Allen (1 September, 1881 – 29 December, 1967) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career
Allen was born in Kansas and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1901. He was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 7 June 1903,[1] to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 June 1906,[2] and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1913.[3]
Great War
Allen was appointed to command destroyer Sampson on 27 June, 1916 and remained in command after the US entry into World War I.[4] He was promoted to the temporary rank of Commander on 31 August, 1917[5] and to the permanent rank of Commander on 15 August, 1918.[6] On 9 September, 1918, he became the first commanding officer of destroyer Dent and held this command into 1919.[7] Allen received the Navy Cross for his service commanding Sampson and Dent.[8]
Interwar Period
Between the World Wars, Allen's commands included the stores ship Rappahannock from 1922 to 1923[9] and the old cruiser Rochester (the former New York) from 1926 to 1928.[10] He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 26 October, 1923, not long after being relieved of command of Rappahannock.[11]
In the 1930's, he commanded a Destroyer Squadron[12] and the Training Base at Naval Operating Base, Norfolk.[13] Allen was placed on the Retired List for ineligibility for further promotion on 30 June, 1936.[14]
World War II
During World War II he was recalled to active duty, serving with the Western Sea Frontier and being promoted on the retired list to Commodore on 14 April, 1944[15] and Rear Admiral on 31 October, 1945.[16]
