The men who served in the United States Navy and other America forces in the Dreadnought Era are unfortunate, from our standpoint, in that their Service Records are not made available to the public, but only to relatives. This severely hamstrings efforts to document their service.

Many of the start dates of appointments in the U.S.N. are taken from the Register of the Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, which is printed but annually and does not reliably record the date of appointment to a ship, but rather seems to document the officers' date of beginning his most recent stint of service.
