The son of Charles E. Barry, Esq., solicitor. Barry emerged from the Training Establishment on 15 January, 1909 and was appointed to the battleship Lord Nelson of Home Fleet.

Barry served fourteen months in the battleship before being sent to Rother for four months, and then to Natal for another four. He finally went to join the battleship Superb in mid-January 1911 and remained in her a year.

On 30 April, 1912, Barry was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant.[1]

Barry received instruction in submarines at Dolphin from 7 January, 1914 until 4 May, 1914, being was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 January, 1914.[2]

By February 1916 this settled down to service in E 12, where he remained until mid October.

In December 1916, an appointment in command of C 20 was cancelled, and he instead commanded C 21. In mid-June 1917 he left her to command D 4..

D 4 suffered a fire in 1918, and Barry was told by Their Lordships that it was "inconceivable that no proper watch was kept on board."[4]

Barry was in command of the submarine D 4 on 12 May, 1918 when she torpedoed (or used the deck gun, according to his Service Record) and sank UB 72 at 50deg 08' N., 2deg, 41' W..[5] He was awarded the D.S.O. for this action at Buckingham Palace on 26 September, 1918.[6]

After two weeks at a periscope course being run from Dolphin, on 17 June 1918 Barry was appointed to R 12, to take command upon her commissioning.

Post-War

He married Mary Eleanor Masali Campbell on 14 September, 1921 at St. George's Church in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.[7]

Barry was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 January, 1922. He was appointed in temporary command of the minesweeper Shrewsbury on 10 July, 1924 and was discharged on 21 August, 1924.[8] On 2 September, 1924, he was appointed in command of Group "M" submarines in reserve.[9]

Barry was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1926.[10]
