Captain (retired) Edward Murray Conrad Barraclough, C.B.E., O.B.E., R.N. (25 April, 1893 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of merchant Rudolph Wedemeyer, Esq. apparently chose to change to a less German-sounding last name.

Barraclough earned his watchkeeping certificate on 8 January, 1915 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1915.

On 7 August, 1916 he was appointed to Penelope and was lent to Vernon for a Torpedo Control Course, which took eleven days.

On 2 November 1916, he applied for service in submarines. On 1 February, 1917, he was sent to Maidstone to serve in her submarines. On 6 May, he was assigned to E 55, where he stayed until 27 August, when he moved to L 7.

Following a four day course at the Periscope School, Barraclough was appointed in command of C 21 on 26 July, 1918.

Post-War

Barraclough was appointed in command of a pair of interned U-boats from February 1919 to the end of 1920, when he was appointed to Vulcan to take command of Group "M" of submarines in reserve.

Barraclough was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1923.

Barraclough was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1928.

Barraclough was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 6 October, 1938.

World War II

Barraclough saw extensive service.

Barraclough was placed on the Retired List on account of age with the rank of Captain on 25 April, 1943.
