In March 1903, a variety of naval engineer positions which had lacked commissions were shuffled to grant the men naval titles though they were not granted executive status:[1]

From 1 January, 1915, the Engineer Branch was incorporated into the Military Branch. Engineer officers retained their existing titles and were not allowed to command and on board ship were still "subject to the authority of any Officer who may be in charge of the Executive duties of the Ship."[2]
