H.M.S. Algerine was one of two Phoenix Class screw sloops completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Upon their completion, Algerine and her sister Phoenix were slated to go to the China Station to become station gunboats.[6]

Commander Ewen Francis Domville was appointed in command of Algerine to take her out to commence service on the China Station on 11 February, 1897. In November, he was cautioned after grounding her through an error in judgment. On 2 March, 1898 he was invalided from command, suffering from nervous exhaustion. Edmond John Warre Slade was appointed in command.

Re-copmmissioned at Esquimalt on 22 February, 1910 for service on the West Coast of America.[7]

She left Esquimalt under Commander Brooker's command for the Bering Strait on 30 July, 1913.[8]

She was lent to the Canadian Government in 1917.
