H.M.S. Amazon was a Thornycroft-built prototype destroyer built for the Royal Navy in the mid 1920s. She and Yarrow & Company's Ambuscade helped determine the design factors that would inform more significant post-war construction, culminating in the "A" and "B" Class Destroyers of 1929-30.

There was an earlier Amazon launched in 1908.

Construction and Service

Amazon was commissioned at Portsmouth on 9 May, 1927 under the command of Commander Francis Howard, who had been appointed to the ship almost a year earlier.[6]

Re-commissioned at Portsmouth 16 October, 1928 for service wqith the Third Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean.[7]

She commissioned at Portsmouth on 1 June, 1932.[8]

Re-commissioned on 1 September, 1933.[9]

Re-commissioned on 3 September, 1934.[10]

Amazon was hit by a practice torpedo while carrying out practice with the Vernon flotilla off Portland in the latter half of May, 1938.[11]
