H.M.S. E 16 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.

Service

On 15 September, 1915, under Lieutenant-Commander Cecil P. Talbot, E 16 sank U 6 at 59deg 10' N., 5deg 9' E..[6]

Her second and final commander, Kenneth James Duff-Dunbar was awarded the D.S.O. "for attacking and torpedoing a German auxiliary ship protected by a screen of a torpedo boat, a small sloop, 4 trawlers, several tugs & small craft, on 22/12/15. The attack was very ably carried out & Lt. Cdr Duff-Dunbar showed great determination in going in and firing a 2nd torpedo, tho' he had been [illegible] by [illeg] screening vessels 50 yards away when firing the first torpedo." Duff-Dunbar would die with his entire crew when E 16 struck a mine on 22 August, 1916.[7]
