Captain (retired) Henry John Haynes, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N. (10 December, 1893 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Colonel C. Haynes of the Royal Engineers.

Haynes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1916.

Post-War

Haynes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1924.

Haynes was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1930.

Haynes was appointed in command of the monitor Terror in October, 1938.

World War II

On 28 March 1943, Haynes was appointed in temporary command of the light cruiser Argonaut, vice Walford. He was superseded on 14 August, 1943 and was apparently appointed to command the American-built escort carrier H.M.S. Empress, which was then called A.C.V. 38, introducing her to Royal Navy service.

Haynes was appointed to the escort carrier H.M.S. Khedive with the acting rank of Captain to take command upon her commissioning for Royal Navy service, which occurred on 25 August 1943. Haynes was placed on the Retired List on account of age with the rank of Captain (retired) on 10 December, 1943 but apparently did not hand over command of his carrier until 9 August, 1944.

Later in 1944, Haynes was put in charge of R.N.A.S. Wingfield, vice Farquhar. He was reverted to the Retired List on 21 August, 1946.
