Hugh Vaughan Lavington

Commander (retired) Hugh Vaughan Lavington, R.N. (2 June, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born at Barton Regis, in Bristol.[1]

Lavington qualified in navigation on 2 December, 1910.[2]

Lavington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1909. He was appointed to the destroyer Acheron as navigator on 24 October, 1911.[3] On 4 March 1913 he was appointed to the third class protected cruiser Pegasus. He survived her loss on 20 September 1914 to the German light cruiser Königsberg at Zanzibar.[4]

He later served as navigator in the light cruiser Dartmouth (until mid-1915) and then in the armoured cruiser Carnarvon.[5]

Lavington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1917.[6]

Lavington was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 8 September, 1922 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 2 June, 1927.[7]

World War II

Lavington was exempted from call-up, as he was General Manager of Trinidad Petroleum Development.[8]
