Lieutenant John Emanuel Armstrong, (24 September, 1880 – 15 December, 1944) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Armstrong was born in Sweden and emigrated to the United States, likely in the 1890's. He enlisted in the Navy, and was eventually appointed Boatswain on 16 January, 1914.[1]
During World War I, Armstrong received a temporary commission as Ensign on 15 August, 1917. He was eventually promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 21 September, 1918.[2][3]
He received his only command assignment when he was appointed the first commanding officer of minesweeper Gannet in 1919.
Armstrong's career was cut short by ill health, and he was placed on the Retired List due to incapacity incident to the service on 29 September, 1920.[4]
He resided in California and died there in 1944.[5]
