Commander (retired) Meredith Stanton Spalding, D.S.C. (17 November, 1895 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Sydney Spalding, Esq., a wholesale stationer.[1]

Appointed to Conqueror from 15 May 1913, then to the new destroyer Ophelia from 30 October 1915. He would fight at the Batle of Jutland in Ophelia as part of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla.

In early November 1916, Spalding took a Torpedo Control Course and then was appointed to Obdurate from 15 November to 3 June, 1917. He served in Milbrook from 12 July 1917 until she paid off on 1 October, 1918, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1917.[2]

Spalding was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1925.[3]

In 1927, he proposed a gun breaing device which was not adopted but which elicited a commendation for his zeal and ingenuity.

Spalding was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 9 March, 1936.[4]

World War II

Drunkenness, reversion to Retired List, eventual Court Martial for drunkenness.[5]
