Mervyn Patrick Traill-Smith

Captain (retired) Mervyn Patrick Traill-Smith, (18 February, 1880 – 17 June, 1951) served in the Royal Navy. There was some confusion as to whether his name was Mervyn Patrick Traill Smith, but it is corrected in his Service Record.

Life & Career

Smith placed twenty-fifth of sixty candidates to the July, 1894 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia following competitive examinations.[1]

Traill-Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.[2]

Traill-Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1910.[3]

Appointed there in January, 1913, Traill-Smith would serve as navigator in H.M.S. Centurion throughout the Great War, being promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916.[4]

Traill-Smith was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 18 February, 1925.[5]

World War II

Some shore-based appointments. Reverted to the Retired List on 28 July, 1941.[6]
