The Norfolk Navy Yard is a major U.S. Navy shipyard located in Virginia that continues to operate in the twenty-first century.

It began operations as Gosport Shipyard in 1767 and fell into Confederate hands during the Civil War, at which time it obtained its present name.

Shipbuilding

After falling into Confederate hands in late April of 1861, the yard gained a place in history when the scuttled steam frigate U.S.S. Merrimack was raised and converted into the ironclad C.S.S. Virginia.
