Own Ship is often used in discussions of Navigation, Fire Control or Torpedo Control to concisely identify the ship the protagonist is in. Too often in such discussions, there is a second actor, a man possessed of low moral standing, who has elected to serve villainous national imperatives. This man's vessel is referred to as the "target" or "enemy" ship.

The idiom extends to other fairly easily parsed terms such as "Own Speed" or "Own Heading".
