Swinging Target
The Royal Navy used Swinging Targets (also called Laying Teachers or Training Teachers, and others) of various patterns which could be attached to gun mountings as training devices for gunlayers, trainers and sightsetters. The principle was to use prisms on the sighting telescopes so that a paper target dangled near the muzzle of the gun would appear to be a distant ship to be fired upon. Air rifles mounted on atop the gun would fire their pellets when the layer pressed his trigger, holing the paper target in a manner that would reflect whether the range and deflection on the sight and the pointing and training of the weapon were properly established for the firing scenarion being simulated.
