Urban Tigner Holmes
Commander Urban Tigner Holmes, (11 April 1869 – 17 April, 1940) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Holmes was born in Arkansas and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1890. He spent the first part of his career in the Engineer branch of the Navy, but was transferred to the Line as a result of the Act of March 3, 1899 with the rank of Lieutenant as of that date.[1]
He served several tours of duty with the Bureau of Steam Engineering, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1905 and later serving as Executive Officer of auxiliary cruiser Dixie.[2]
Holmes was promoted to the rank of Commander on 15 February, 1911 and received his first, and only, command when he was appointed commanding officer of repair ship Vestal in 1914. He held command only until mid-1915, then was listed in the next several Register's as "In Care of Navy Department" or "Sick Leave" before being placed on the Retired List at his own application after 30 years of service on 18 January, 1917.[3][4][5]
