Charles Creighton Halliday
Commander R.N.R. (retired) Charles Creighton Halliday (10 April, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
In 1911, Halliday was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal for saving life from drowning.[1] That same year, he was also awarded the Stanhope Medal.[2]
Halliday was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 15 July, 1915.[3]
Halliday commanded the destroyer Syren from mid-1917 through February, 1918. In early 1918, he received an adverse report regarding a collision between Syren and S.S. Saima.[4]
Halliday was appointed in command of the fleet messenger Polly Bridge on 29 March, 1918. In May he was lent to the fleet messenger Floris. Worse, at some point in 1918, he "showed discontent & insubordination". He was reverted to General Service. A 1 January 1919 evaluation from Captain (S) Ninth Submarine Flotilla Albert Percy Addison noted: "Conduct unsatisfactory. This officer failed in his duty on several occasions, was unable to get on with captain of E 53 Submarine [Lt. Lawrence Hodson Bayley] and generally speaking is not considered a very suitable officer for H.M. Service."[5]
Halliday was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 15 July, 1923.[6]
Halliday was placed on the Retired List on 20 December 1926 and promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 10 April, 1927.[7]
World War II
Held seriously to blame for grounding of H.T. Aquitania on 17 March 1940, for which he was allotted Their Lordships' severe displeasure.[8]
In 1948, Halliday was living in San Francisco, employed as Hull Superintendent, Ship Repair Department, Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
