Chester Sayre Roberts
Lieutenant Commander (temporary) Chester Sayre Roberts, (18 November, 1888 – ) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Chester S. Roberts was born in New York, but was appointed to the Naval Academy from Illinois, graduating with the class of 1909. He was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 5 June, 1911.[1]
Roberts was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 5 June, 1914 and at this rank served as an Aide to the Commander of the Third Division of the Atlantic Fleet.[2]
Roberts was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 5 June, 1917. For the duration of American involvement in World War I, he served at the Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, eventually becoming Executive Officer by 1918. During this time, he was promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 February, 1918.[3]
When he was relieved from this assignment in May, 1919, Roberts had orders to become Executive Officer of the transport Pretoria, a converted German ocean liner.[4] However, the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships indicates he became the first commanding officer of destroyer Sinclair in October, 1919, though this editor could find no contemporary sources confirming this.
Regardless, Roberts soon left the Naval Service, with his resignation being accepted effective 19 November, 1919.[5]
