Compass Bearing is the direction to an object from a vantage point, as would be indicated by a compass.

Sometimes the ambiguous term Bearing is used when compass bearing is the intended meaning, but caution must be taken as the source may intend to mean relative bearing.

Units of Measure

This was expressed in degrees from 0 to 359, or as points on the compass rose (e.g.: North, Northwest, North by East). Sometimes, it was expressed in the old system of Compass Quadrant Bearings, e.g.: 100 degrees would be "South 80 East" and 255 degrees would be "North 5 West". Compass quadrant bearings was falling into disuse as the war approached.
