Gilbert Henry Flavel
Commander R.N.R. (retired) Gilbert Henry Flavel, R.D. (12 July, 1881 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Flavel was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 18 October, 1909.[1]
In March 1915, Flavel was appointe dto take charge of H.M. Telegraph Ship Monarch and was in command when torpedoed in September, 1915.[2]
Flavel was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 18 October, 1917. He appears to have commanded a ship named Rightwhale from 19 October, 1917 to 19 March, 1918. In late 1918, he was a commodore of Mediterranean convoys. He was demobilised on 27 February, 1919.[3]
After taking work as Chief Officer of P.O. Telegraph Ship Alert, P.O. Cable Depot, Flavel applied for promotion to the rank of Commander R.N.R. in June, 1921.[4]
It is not clear when he received this promotion, as the application has a handwritten note dated 28 April 1923 to the effect that he may have been delayed in receiving required naval training, stating,[5]
This officer's attention was directed on 5.12.22 to his approaching liability to removal from the list under Article III(a) of A.F.O. 1755/21, and he was requested to furnish the explanation required by par(b) of that Article. He stated on 4.2.23 in reply, that owing to cable work on hand he regretted he was unable to perform the necessary traiing at present, and in accordance with [illeg] 1001/50/22.2.23 he was requested on 27.2.23 to state when he proposed to commence his training, but no reply has been received.
World War II
In 1948, Flavel reported himself, at age 67, fit for shore and home service only, as a retired Commander, Post Office Submarine Cable Department.[6]
