Builder: Pembroke Royal Dockyard[1]
Laid down: May, 1849[2]
Launched: 14 Sep, 1852[3]

H.M.S. Duke of Wellington was a 131-gun ship of the line featuring a full rig and a modest steam plant repurposed from another vessel.

She resembled a fighting ship from 50 years earlier, but of larger proportion. In the Dreadnought Era, she served as a receiving ship at Portsmouth.

Duke of Wellington replaced H.M.S. Victory as flagship of the Port Admiral at Portsmouth from 1869 to 1891 and as flagship for Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth from 24 October, 1884 to 1886, though some Flag Captains to the C-in-C lived aboard into the 1890s, at least.

Service

She was re-commissioned at Portsmouth 1 January, 1878.[6]
