H.M.S. Phaeton was one of four second class protected cruisers of the Leander class completed between 1885 and 1887.

There was also a light cruiser named Phaeton that fought in the Great War.

Service

Re-commissioned at Malta on 18 March, 1890.[6]

She was commissioned on 8 July 1896 in order to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1896 under the command of Captain Charles J. Norcock.[7][8][9]

Phaeton collided with Thrasher on a foggy night on 19 August, 1897 as both were en route to Vigo from Plymouth. A Court Martial brought charges of having hazarded the ship upon Captain Francis George Kirby and officer of the watch Lieutenant Charles Donald Graham, for which both were found partly at fault.[10]

Phaeton was due to begin refitting at Esquimalt at the end of December 1901, but this was delayed by the disappearance of the sloop Condor during a cruise from Esquimalt to Honolulu. Phaeton was sent out to search for the Condor on 20 January, 1902.[11]
