Construction & Service

A marine who had fallen overboard during the ship's trials at Sheerness was saved from drowning by a Mr. Smith, who was subsequently awarded the Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal for his brave effort.[6]

She was commissioned into the Medway Fleet Reserve at Sheerness Dockyard for temporary service in February, 1894.[7] On 1 March, she made 17 knots a 177 psi, 207 rpm and 3,071 indicated horspower.[8]

In August, 1894, Speedy was ordered to join the Channel Squadron for its next cruise under the command of Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy.[9] Perhaps by virtue of her unique contemporary modernity, she was initially used as a despatch vessel.[10]

Speedy sank after striking a mine in the Humber on 3 September, 1914.[11]
