Henry Aloysius Stanley
Lieutenant Commander (retired) Henry Aloysius Stanley, (2 August, 1877 – 18 January, 1960) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Stanley was born in California and enlisted in the United States Navy in approximately 1893. He served in the enlisted ranks until being appointed Boatswain on 30 July, 1903.[1] He was advanced to Chief Boatswain on 30 July, 1909.[2]
During World War I, Stanley was among the many Warrant Officers who received temporary commissions. While the date of his commission as Ensign cannot currently be determined, he was promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 15 October, 1917 and to the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 1 July, 1918.[3][4]
Shortly after the war ended, Stanley was appointed the first commanding officer of minesweeper Lark, assuming command upon the ship's commissioning in April 1919. He would receive the Navy Cross for his service in mine clearing operations while in this posting, which ended in late 1919.[5][6][7]
On 3 August, 1920, Stanley received a permanent commission in the rank of Lieutenant.[8] Most of the remainder of his service was spent on shore duty, but he did command minesweeper Kingfisher from 1923 into 1924, and one source indicates he may have briefly commanded minesweeper Partridge in early 1923.[9][10][11]
Stanley was placed on the Retired List at his own request after over 30 years of service on 15 December, 1927.[12] He was recalled to active duty in World War II, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the Retired List on 11 September, 1942.[13]
Returned to inactive duty after the war, Stanley resided in Oregon, where he died in early 1960.[14]
