Joseph Beale

Medical Director Joseph Beale, (30 December 1814 – 23 September 1889) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Beale was born in Philadelphia and was appointed as an Assistant Surgeon on 6 September, 1837. He was promoted to the rank of Passed Assistant Surgeon on 14 March, 1843, and to the rank of Surgeon on 19 April, 1848. He was promoted to the rank of Medical Director on 3 March, 1871.[1]

Beale became Surgeon-General of the Navy and Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in December, 1873. He retired from this position due to age with the relative rank of Commodore at the end of 1876 and died in Philadelphia in 1889.[2][3]
