Order in Council
WHEREAS there was this day read at the Board a Memorial from the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated the 4th day of June, 1945 (C.W. 19680/45), in the words following, viz.:—
Whereas we consider it desirable that many officers who have served in Your Majesty's Navy or Royal Marines during hostilities should be given recognition of their services by permission to use, after ceasing employment, a rank higher than their substantive rank, especially officers who have held acting higher rank:
We beg humbly to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased, by your Order in Council, to authorize us at our discretion to grant to such an officer a higher rank, to be known as War Service Rank, such grant having effect only when the officer is not serving."
HIS MAJESTY, having taken the said Memorial into consideration, was pleased, by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to approve of what is therein proposed.
AND the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the necessary directions herein accordingly.
