S.M.S. D 3 was one of two D 3 Class divisional torpedo boats completed for the Imperial German Navy.

Construction

D 3 was launched on 1 October, 1887.[8]

Service

D 3 was commissioned on 3 May, 1888, and served as a flagship in torpedo boat and minesweeper flotillas until the outbreak of the First World War.[9]

In early 1897 D 3 was serving as the flagship of the V. Torpedobootsdivision (Reserve), an element of the I. Torpedoaötheilung based at Kiel.[10]

After coastal defense service in 1914, D 3 became a submarine training vessel in 1916. After the Armistice she returned to duties with the Reichsmarine's minesweeper flotillas, helping to remove the thousands of mines sown in European waters throughout the war. She was stricken on 7 December, 1920 and broken up the next year in Wilhelmshaven.[11]
