U.S.S. Nanshan was a collier purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1898.

Construction

Nanshan was launched on 16 November, 1895 by the Grangemouth Dockyard Co. of Grangemouth, Scotland. She was built as a merchant collier for service in the Far East, and she was purchased by the U.S. Navy from Frank Smythe on 6 April, 1898, for service with Commodore George Dewey's Asiatic Squadron.

Service

Nanshan joined Dewey's squadron on the day of her purchase.[7] Unlike other colliers purchased for use in the Spanish-American War, Nanshan was not commissioned or commanded by a U.S. Navy officer. Instead, Captain E. H. Stovell of the British Marine Service took command of the collier.

With the outbreak of war, Nanshan accompanied Dewey's squadron on their voyage to Manila Bay, and waited outside the entrance of the harbor during the subsequent battle. Nanshan remained in the Far East until 1913, when she was transferred to San Francisco.

On 1 August, 1914 the Nanshan was commissioned into the U.S. Navy with her first Navy crew.

Decommissioned on 18 January, 1922, she was sold on 29 July to the John A. Berovich Company of Oakland, California for scrapping.
