U.S.S. Powhatan was a side-wheel frigate completed for the U.S. Navy in 1852, remaining on the Navy List into the early years of the "New Navy".

Construction

Her hull was designed by Francis Grice and her engines by Charles H. Haswell.[8] Her engines were contracted to A. Mehaffey & Co., Portsmouth, Virginia.[9]

Service

Powhatan was part of Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron during his negotiatons with Japan in 1854.[10]

Powhatan was decommissioned on 2 June, 1886, and was sold to Burdette Pond of Meriden, Connecticut for breaking up on 30 July, 1887. She was scrapped on 5 August, 1887.[11][12]
