Life & Career

Beehler was born in Maryland and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1868.[1].

Beehler was commissioned Ensign on 19 April, 1869, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 September, 1874. It took twenty-two years before he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 21 June, 1896.[2] He saw routine duty at sea and ashore early in his career, including multiple tours at the Office of Naval Intelligence after its establishment. His service also included a tour as Flag Lieutenant on the South Atlantic Station in the early 1880's.[3]

During the Spanish-American War, Beehler served as Executive Officer on Unprotected Cruiser Montgomery.[4] The following year, he was appointed Naval Attache, accredited to Berlin, Rome, and Vienna, a tour that lasted until 1902. During this time, he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 September, 1899.[5]

After briefly commanding monitor Monterey in Philippine waters, Beehler was promoted to the rank of Captain on 28 November, 1904.[6][7] He became Commandant of Naval Station Key West, with additional duty as Commandant Seventh Naval District, in May, 1905. Despite being placed on the Retired List 30 June, 1907 at his own request under the provisions of the Act of March 3, 1899 he remained in this position until November, 1910. Beehler had been promoted to the rank of Commodore on the Retired List effective 30 June, 1907.[8][9][10]

Beehler resided in Annapolis in retirement, publishing a book on the Italian-Turkish War of 1911-1912. He died there in 1915.[11][12]
