Garth Henry Fyson Owles
Commander Garth Henry Fyson Owles, D.S.O., D.S.C. (25 August, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Owles's first appointment was to the battlecruiser Princess Royal on 1 May, 1915. He would see action in her at the Battle of Jutland. On 31 August, 1917, he left her to take up an appointment in the monitor Raglan. In 1918, he would serve aboard three destroyers: Ulysses, Radstock and Narwhal.[1]
Owles was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1919.[2]
He received his first command appointment in submarines in H 24, commencing on 1 November, 1924. On 3 March 1925, he was appointed to Titania to command an unspecified submarine(s) attached to her flotilla.[3]
Owles was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1927.[4]
World War II
He was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 25 August, 1941. He would be mentioned in despatches in 1944 in relation to the landings at Normandy.[5]
