Service
In the summer of 1880 the Admiralty decided to deploy several torpedo boats to overseas bases. In July the responsible authorities at Portsmouth were "ordered to forward a couple of first-class torpedo boats to Malta and Gibraltar."[6] Resultantly, T.B. 9 was taken out to Malta from Portsmouth aboard the troopship Tamar in August 1880 alongside her sister T.B. 7, destined for Gibraltar.[7]
In 1881, T.B. 9 was listed as being fitted for Whitehead and was the only boat serving out of Malta.[8]
In 1895, she was one of ten first-class T.B.s stationed in Malta.[9]
T.B. 9's hull was sold for scrapping at Malta in 1900. Her engine was removed for use at Malta Dockyard.[10]
