U.S.S. Porpoise was one of seven Plunger (or "A") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
Service
Porpoise commissioned alongside her sister Shark at the Holland Torpedo Boatyard at New Suffolk, New York on 19 September, 1903, with Lieutenant Charles P. Nelson in joint command.
Porpoise was renamed A-6 on 17 November, 1911.
In 1916, all the "A" class boats but A-1 were stationed in the Philippines in Manila Bay along with all three "B" class boats, their crews living aboard their tenders Monadnock and Mohican.[4]
