Captain John Fawcett, R.N., Retired (13 March, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Somerford Keynes Wiltshire, Fawcett gained two months time on passing out of Britannia on 15 July, 1900.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1906 while deployed in the armoured cruiser Carnarvon in the Mediterranean.[1]
He was appointed in command of a series of destroyers, interspersing this service with stints in capital ships, such as Indomitable from 31 July to 25 November, 1911, and then in Lord Nelson until 17 June, 1913 when he was appointed to command of the "B" Class destroyer Griffon. He was blamed for a collision between Griffon and Vigilant in 1913, but received only a mild warning to be more careful.[2]
Fawcett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1914.[3]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Orwell on 14 July, 1914.[4]
Great War
Fawcett was appointed in command of the destroyer Watchman on 15 January, 1918.[5]
Fawcett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[6]
Post-war
On 15 April, 1919, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Redoubt.[7]
Fawcett was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 26 June, 1930.[8]
World War II
Fawcett was recalled to service. He was appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Aurania upon her commissioning in September of 1939, but this command was terminated within days. At the end of the month, he was appointed in command of the depot ship Sandhurst.[9]
Fawcett was then moved to command the destroyer tender Woolwich, vice Thornton on 19 September, 1939. Service as Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral (D) Mediterranean carried him to 28 May 1942 when his appointment was terminated.
Following a month's time back on the Retired List, he was appointed for command of the Combined Operations Base, Lowestoft on 4 August, 1942. He remained there until 19 January, 1943 when he experienced cardiac issues.[10]
1945 found him admitted to Haslar Naval Hospital for an indefinite period.
